SEO or Pay Per Click: Which Should You Start With?

SEO builds traffic you do not pay for per click. Pay per click buys visits today. How to choose, and when to run both, in plain English.

Most businesses that want more enquiries from Google end up asking the same question: should we invest in SEO, or should we pay for ads? Both put you in front of people who are searching for what you sell. They just work on very different timelines and budgets.

What each one actually is

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of making your website the best answer to a search, so Google shows it in the normal, unpaid results. It covers the technical health of your site, the content on your pages and the other websites that link to you.

Pay per click (PPC) means paying Google, or a social platform, to show your ad. You set a budget, choose the searches or audiences you want, and pay each time someone clicks.

The big difference: time versus money

  • PPC is fast. A well set up campaign can bring visitors the same day it goes live. The moment you stop paying, the traffic stops.
  • SEO is slow to start. It usually takes months to climb the rankings for competitive searches. Once you are there, the visits keep coming without a cost per click.

A simple way to think about it: PPC is renting traffic, SEO is building something you own.

When to start with pay per click

  • You have just launched and need enquiries now.
  • You are testing a new service and want to know quickly whether people will pay for it.
  • You sell something seasonal or time limited, like a sale or an event.
  • Your market is crowded with established competitors that will take time to outrank.

PPC also gives you fast data. Within a few weeks you can see which search terms bring enquiries, and that tells you which pages are worth building for SEO.

When to start with SEO

  • Your budget is tight and you cannot keep paying for every click.
  • Your customers research before they buy and read articles, guides and reviews.
  • You serve a local area and want to appear in map results and "near me" searches.
  • You are planning to be in business for years, not weeks.

The answer for most businesses: both, in the right order

The approach we recommend to most clients is to run a focused PPC campaign for quick wins, while building SEO in the background. As your rankings grow for your most valuable searches, you can reduce ad spend on those terms and move budget to new ones.

Whatever you choose, measure it. Track calls and form enquiries, not just clicks. A campaign that brings fewer visitors who actually get in touch is worth more than a big traffic number that never turns into work.

Where to begin

If you are not sure which to start with, look at three things: how quickly you need results, how much you can spend each month, and how competitive your search terms are. Our team can review all three and give you a straight recommendation.
