Scroll through any social feed and you will notice something: the posts that stop you are rarely the glossy ones. They are real people, real places and real opinions. That is why authentic content and user-generated content (UGC) have become some of the most effective tools in modern marketing.
What is user-generated content?
UGC is anything your customers create about you: reviews, photos, videos, unboxings, testimonials and social posts. It is not made by your marketing team, and that is exactly why people trust it.
Why it works
- Trust: people believe other customers more than they believe a brand talking about itself.
- Relevance: a real customer shows how your product or service fits into everyday life.
- Volume: your customers can create far more content than any one marketing team.
- Platforms reward it: social platforms tend to favour content that feels natural and gets people talking.
Authentic does not mean careless
Authentic content is honest, not sloppy. It still needs to be on brand, clear and useful. Behind-the-scenes clips, your team explaining how they solve a problem, or a client walking through their results all feel genuine while still looking professional.
How to get more UGC
- Ask. Happy clients are usually glad to share a review or a photo. Make it easy with a direct link.
- Give people a reason: a branded hashtag, a feature on your page or a small thank-you.
- Make something worth sharing. Great packaging, a memorable experience or a surprising result gets talked about.
- Reply and reshare. When customers see others being featured, more join in.
Use it the right way
- Always get permission before reposting someone's content, and credit them.
- Never fake it. Made-up reviews break platform rules and consumer laws, and damage trust when found out.
- Put the best UGC where decisions happen: on your website, service pages, ads and proposals, not just your social feed.
Start this week
Pick your five happiest clients and ask each one for a short review or a photo of your work in action. Share them over the next month and watch which ones get the most response. That is your first lesson in what your audience really wants to see.
